Tim Illguth: Site Reliability Engineer and Inventor

My Story

Tim Illguth: Technological Achievements

While Studying Electrical Engineering, I was hired to teach robotics for NASA Outreach.
Since then I’ve worked as a System admin and a Network Engineer and gained a Partnership with UAF for a Fiber Optic Tool Patent

I finished all the required math classes for my EE degree by the end of my sophomore year. I impressed the right people and was asked to teach a robotics outreach program. This outreach program was for a NASA grant where I taught robotics and C++ programming for 5 years.

While teaching, I learned about Linux and got hooked on open source software. I pursued a professional certification and began a career as a Linux Systems Administrator. While working I was asked by my supervisor if I was interested in taking on networking for our organization. I pursued a network admin certificate and began working as a Linux Systems Administrator and Network Engineer.

As a network engineer I invented a new fiber optics tool and have a partnership with UAF and backing from the national science foundation to license it for commercialization.

More Accomplishments

01

System Builds

Since earning my first Linux Admin Certification in 2016, I’ve built and maintained hundreds of production Linux and Windows servers. Including hardware and software RAID configurations and AWS cloud. I’ve also maintained over 100 workstations for employees to help them keep running at peak efficiency.

02

Network and VPN Design

I earned my first professional network certification in 2019. I have architected built and maintained whole networks and SSL and IPsec VPNs. I’ve built and maintained network diagrams as well as network system documentation. I still hold active certifications in network administration and network security.

03

Patented Technology

While working as a network engineer at NASA contractor ASF. I designed and patented a new Fiber Optics tool. This tool is designed to make fiber optic cabling much easier. The patent is owned by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and I was backed by the national science foundation in it’s development.

04

Giving back

I started investing in real estate in 2006 and learned a lot and wanted to pass on that knowledge. I formed a group of investors that shared their knowledge for free. The group is still active today with new leadership and over 100 members.

05

Blockchain Development

Since Bitcoin was $184/coin I’ve been following blockchain technology. I earned a blockchain certification in 2022. I’ve since pushed a layer 2 token and crowdfunding app to the testnet with more projects to follow. I have more details about this in the Projects section of my website.

06

Web Design/Development

I’ve build and still maintain several websites including this one. I’ve built websites in WordPress and Squarespace. I’ve build sites with scheduling and rental functionality. I’ve also built billing and accounts receivable with tax functionality.

My Journey

Additional Talents

My journey in IT has recently accelerated into blockchain development, and I’ve been asked on more than one occasion to present solutions to upper management. This is due to my ability to learn quickly, my person-ability and my ability to teach concepts clearly.

My interest in open source software has grown since I discovered Linux nearly 14 years ago. It’s also expanded to web design with WordPress. This is a picture of me after I designed and built a new website for my wife’s bike and kayak rental business which you can see here
